A Clinical Study of Chronic Pain

Abstract
In this study, the author have attempted to reveal the features and clinical manifestations of chronic pain. Subjects were neuropsychiatric, neurologic, orthopedic, and neurosugical patients who were complained of acute and chronic pain at Chung Ang University hospital from March 1, 1990 to July 31, 1990.
The sampling were performed through the psychiatric interview and questionnaires. The data were processed by the computer using a spss program and were analyzed by a chi-spare test, an ANOVA, and a Mann-Whitney U test.
The results were as follows:
1) The psychogenic chronic pain group was suffered from more severe pains than the psychogenic acute group.
2) The psychogenic chronic pain group was in the older age group, and was more closely related with the marriage stress among the life event stresses than that of the organic chronic pain group.
3) The anxious trends of psychogenic chronic pain group were higher than that of psychogenic acute pain group and organic chronic pain group. Among the anxious trends physical anxiety symptoms such as musculo-skeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory anxiety symptoms were higher in the psychogenic chronic pain group than in the psychogenic acute pain group and organic chronic pain group.
4) The depressive trends of psychogenic chronic pain group were higher than that of the psychogenic acute pain group. Among the depressive trends, pervasive affect scores were higher in the psychogenic chronic apin group than in the organic chronic pain group; and physiological, psychological, ideational depression scores were higher in the psychogenic chronic pain group than in the psychogenic acute pain group.
